Barry Geraghty
Barry Geraghty is one of the most consistent performers in National Hunt racing. Not only is Geraghty one of the leading lights in Irish racing, but his father was also an accomplished amateur jockey and two of his brothers are also professional jockeys. His brother Ross won the Irish Grand National in 2002.
Barry Geraghty’s career in racing started with participation in pony races during his teenage years. Geraghty soon came to the attention of trainer Noel Meade and began riding for Meade professionally in 1997. Geraghty’s first win came that year when he won at Down Royal on Stagalier. A more significant win came a few months later when he won the Midlands Grand National on Uttoxeter.
During the next four years Barry Geraghty partnered with a series of top class racehorses including Moscow Flyer and the legendary Florida Pearl. The consistent performances of these horses ensured that Geraghty was a regular winner at major events, and in 2003 achieved his first major title with a Gold Cup win at Punchestown.
The 2002/2003 partnership of Barry Geraghty and Moscow Flyer proved to be almost invincible. The formidable duo was a force to reckon with at the Cheltenham Festival, winning the Queen Mother Championship Hurdle. Geraghty won another four races to easily claim the title of jockey of the tournament.
Barry Geraghty, 2008 Grand National jockey, capped off that season by capturing the greatest prize in horseracing when he partnered Monty’s Pass to take the Grand National. His incredible success on the track and his charm off it earned the Grand National jockey the title of ‘Sports Personality of the Year’ for 2003.
Barry Geraghty’s successful partnership with Moscow Flyer continued into the next season with the duo winning the Champion Steeplechase at Punchestown. Their journey that season was not without incident however, as Moscow Flyer failed to retain his Champion Chase title at the Cheltenham Festival and instead chose to unseat his illustrious jockey.
In the 2004/2005 season Geraghty partnered up with his next winner, Thomas Taaffe’s Kicking King. Together the pair won a series of major titles, winning the King George VI Chase, the Gold Cup at Cheltenham and the Gold Cup at Punchestown.
