Grand National Travel

Grand National Travel by Car:

Grand National travellers approaching Liverpool from the South can access the city via the M6. Take junction 21A onto the M62 Westbound then take junction 6 onto the M57. The M57 is well signposted for Aintree Racecourse, and following the signs will lead directly to the site of the Grand National.

Grand National travellers approaching Liverpool from the North can follow the M6 until junction 26. Once on the M58 follow the Aintree Racecourse signposts to the Grand National.

There are limited parking facilities available at the racecourse on race day, and it is recommended that you book in advance if planning to travel to the Grand National by car. Additional parking is offered by the Brookfield School in Kirkby, who offer a ride to the racecourse to those making use of their facilities.

Grand National Travel by Bus:

National Express, Britain’s largest inter-city bus service operates a station in the center of Liverpool. Bus journeys from London take up to five hours, with Manchester only an hour away from Liverpool.

Megabus also operates a daily service from London to Liverpool.

Grand National Travel by Rail:

Aintree Racecourse is serviced by its own railway station, Aintree Station. This station is serviced by Liverpool’s main-line train station, Liverpool Central Station.

Liverpool is approximately 2 hours from London by train, and trains leave on the hour. Tickets can be rather expensive if you don’t book in advance. Leeds, Birmingham and Manchester also offer frequent services to Liverpool Central Station.

Grand National Travel by Air:

Liverpool is serviced by the John Lennon International Airport, which provides access to Liverpool to both international and domestic flights, as well as discount airlines including Easyjet and Ryanair.

The Airport Express offers inexpensive passage to Liverpool city center every half hour.

Aintree racecourse can also be easily accessed by Grand National travelers flying in to Manchester Airport. As the biggest airport in the UK outside of London, Manchester Airport offers access to over 100 international carriers as well as discount airlines. Trains run direct from the airport to Piccadilly and Oxford Road stations, which in turn offer main-line services to Liverpool Central Station.
