Top Novices’ Hurdle

The Top Novices’ Hurdle is a Grade 2 hurdles race run during the course of the annual Aintree Festival. The race is run over a distance of 2 miles 110 yards and features 9 hurdles. Entry to the Top Novices’ Hurdle is restricted to 4-year-old and above hurdlers.

The Top Novices’ Hurdle is regarded as the sequel to the Cheltenham Festival’s Supreme Novices’ Hurdle. It is rare for horses to win both races, and the last racehorse to win both events did so in 1984.

The Top Novices’ Hurdle has featured a number of performances by future hurdles stars. 2006 winner, Straw Bear, went on to claim victories in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle and the Christmas Hurdle. 1984 winner, Browne’s Gazette, was the only racehorse to claim victory in the both the Top Novices’ Hurdle and the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.
